Two myths I think are true

by Eugene Day
(Texas, USA)

As a Redhead, with a Redhead Sister, a Redheaded Son, and Redhead Niece and Nephew, I can tell you that Redheaded women have a nasty mean streak and temper. I can't say what causes it, but all the Redheads in my family and that I know have a fiery temper to go with the hair (myself included).

The other one is that I think Redheads are more sensitive to physical reactions. We bruise more easily. Scientifically proven, it usually takes more pain reducer to reduce pain for a redhead (dentists have to use more novocaine, hence your dentist story), and I think that makes Redheads also more passionate. We seem to feel things on a physical, good or bad, than more people.

Re: Two myths I think are true

I'm a 21-year-old Redhead, and I agree fully with the first myth--I definitely have a short fuse that can be set off easily. My temper and being extremely vocal when upset is something everyone notices when they get to know me.

However, I don't think every Redhead has the same pain tolerance stereotype... I had to have a few fillings at the dentist throughout middle school and high school, but I never took the novacaine. I just sat through it, with just a little discomfort if the certain cavity happened to be pretty deep. My tolerance of pain is just as high on the rest of my body. But I WILL say that I do bruise very easily. For example: I've even gotten bruises from leaning a hip or elbow against something for a long period of time.

A redhead family!!

Wow, thanks for your input Eugene! Very interesting to read about you, your redhead family and friends, and your observations. I think you qualify as an expert on this subject since you've experienced it all first hand! I find it all fascinating and do notice some of these traits in my own red-haired daughters, although at times I think it was situational or hormonal or just being stressed or being a teenager, etc. BUT, I do feel the fiery personality is there for sure -- plus talent and beauty of course! I feel so blessed that God gave us redheads! Well, thanks for sharing and please do visit again!
