Stereotypes About Red Heads

Flames(What's YOUR opinion on these stereotypes? --
CLICK HERE to share your view at the bottom of this page.

-- Here are some 'assumptions' or 'stereotypes' about red heads (gingers) that I've read or heard people say. I don't agree with all of them. Here's a list:

  • Hot-tempered or fiery temper (common)
  • Original
  • Seductive and alluring
  • Passionate
  • Attractive
  • Gregarious
  • Fun-loving
  • Sexually aggressive, wild
  • Friendly
  • Loyal
  • Opinionated
  • Adventurous
  • Smart
  • Noisy
  • Strong warrior
  • Politically strong
  • Evil
  • Ugly
  • Unpredictable
  • Crazy or emotionally unstable, zany
  • Untrustworthy
  • Ill-tempered

A recent example is when one of my red-haired kids went to a new dentist. She was nervous, as many people are; but, when she got upset at the dentist's lack of sensitivity and not explaining procedures, he very quickly assumed it was 'because she was a redhead' that she got so upset! That just made it worse... (I was angry just hearing about it!)

-- DO REDHEADS REALLY HAVE A DIFFERENT TEMPERAMENT? --

My Personal Opinion:
From our own experiences with our red-haired kids, redheads do tend to be noticed more, teased more, singled out, and labeled....and so perhaps they may act differently because of that attention (positive and negative). Perhaps they begin to accept the redhead label as an excuse to act a certain way?

I don't personally think their negative reactions are because of the redhead gene but because of how people single them out, etc.
People blame normal human reactions to situations on
'having red hair'...and so it gets blown out of proportion and they're typecast as 'how they are'. Smiley
IF a brunette or blonde gets angry it's okay, but if a redhead gets angry then it's because of their 'redhead temper'...baloney!...
(But that's just me...)

Are red heads unique, passionate, smart and creative? You bet!!!

....A FEW OTHER OPINIONS....

  • From - A Redhead, Samantha:
"I think it's all a bunch of baloney (I'd say the other but it's a bit too strong) about redheads being mad just because of their tempers that come with their hair colors. Somebody has to do something to make us this mad, and even then...

Many people can't realize the tolerance we redheads have built to the petty name-calling that we get before it goes too far. We are normal people just like everyone else in this country, and everywhere around the world. We have normal reactions like everyone else. But what sets us apart is that many ignoramuses will find any excuse (our hair color) to make fun of us redheads like they don't do with blondes, brunettes, or raven-hairedpeople. Yet we're expected to act like robots? No, I won't buy that either.

And I also don't buy that redheads are not trustworthy. Who came up with that one anyway? But I will agree with the positive stereotypes put on us."

  • From - Just a student, Ilaria:
"I'd love to have my hair red. I live in Italy and I can say that here in Italy there are many people (mostly women) who dye their hair red because it's a loved colour so I don't actually understand the all prejudices against redhead. But, I found this page interesting because I'm writing stories about a character who is redhead (most of my characters are redhead). About genetics... I study biology and there is nothing that links the temperament to the colour of the hair. Every person has a character that is the result of his experiences and life."

  • From - I'm a redhaired girl! Cower in fear of my mighty redness! RAWR!, Allaiyah:
-- 7 Positive stereotypes of redheads - Alluring, Passionate, Original, Sexually aggressive, Loyal, Fun-loving, Adventurous
-- 7 Negative stereotypes of redheads - Bitchy, Intimidating, Temperamental, Unpredictable, Opinionated, Emotionally unstable, Crazy."
