Stereotypes: From Scottish redhead - Sharon

by Sharon Vanderwerf
(Edinburgh, Scotland)

I am a redhead, and I think I am quieter rather than fiery due to the attention my hair gets. I am very trustworthy, kind and charitable, but people seem to be cautious and surprised by my friendliness and chattiness. I do get fed up of being judged by people before they even know me. When someone stares too much or sniggers, I feel like saying, "You know it is rude to stare." It does all get to me lots. Most of negative things come from other women; men are generally ok, unless they are in a group and still teenagers.

I did flare up the other day when someone walked up behind me and belched on the back of my neck before calling me "ginger" -- that was too much to take. At that point, yes I was very hot tempered, but not because I have red hair. Anyone with any colour of hair would be upset by that treatment.

Hello Scotland!

Thanks Sharon for sharing your story. I found it interesting that you noticed a lot of the negative things come from other women! Are they jealous? I think women should help each other, not hurt each other. I admit the story about the 'belcher' would make me upset too... people can be SO rude... and yes, hair color shouldn't matter!
Appreciate your honesty and sharing...

By the way, when we were living in the U.K. many years ago, our family had visited Scotland and your lovely city several times and loved it! SO beautiful... Blessings...
