Stereotypes: Don't Touch Me!

by Melinda
(California)

I am 34 years old and have had soft curly red hair all my life. Because of this adults have ALWAYS touched my hair and my family always told me to "be nice." It had gotten so bad that when I became 18 I became rude and do not like people to touch me at ALL. So if I'm ill tempered it's because I had 18 years of " be nice" built up.

Also while traveling from California to Nebraska my family stopped at a store in a small town, and there was a little girl who hid behind her mother and was truly frightened of my presence. I later found out that as a redhead it was assumed that I was a "child or part of" the devil. The devil is depicted as red in color therefore I must be some part of. The rest of the trip with my family teasing me was "delightful"...

One Lady forgot to ask and....
by: Anonymous

When I was little I HATED my hair b/c of all the compliments. My mom told me a story that I almost didn't believe --

At the grocery store when I was maybe 3: We are checking out. I'm facing away from the lady behind me and (according to my mom) I whipped my head around and (as a 3 year old) snarled "Don't Touch me!" My mom had seen the whole thing and before she could say anything the lady touched my hair and I said that. Mom thought I had a "slightly evil" moment. No one has touched my hair since. I'm a teen now.

Your 'no touching' story

Reply by Deb at RR: Wow...thanks Melinda for sharing your very interesting story and your thoughts on all this. I can definitely agree with you about how people want to touch the red hair. As a mom of redheads, this kind of attention happened fairly frequently to our family when my girls were younger too. It can be awkward because as a parent you want to be protective of your kids yet kind to people if they mean well -- the attention does get old sometimes and annoying too! -- I can see how you would finally get fed up with it and not want people to touch you -- to just leave you alone and get out of your space!

I have to admit your story about the child being afraid of you because of your red hair was a new one for me! -- wow... just never know what people are thinking!... thanks for sharing and please visit again.
