Redhead Song

This little "kid" number became very popular and the redhead author, Irene Franklin, adopted it as her theme song. In an article in "Everybody’s Magazine" (Jan.1921) entitled "A Redhead With Something Under It" she was quoted:
"It was a sort of accident," she confesses. "The lyric was dreadful. It didn't rhyme, it didn't scan, it didn't seem to be much of anything. It's probably the worst lyric I ever wrote. The public took it to its breast as its own child."....Not only did the public take it to its breast, but it began showing it off to the neighbors. The composer-partner-husband had written a tune for it that had a curious note of melancholy in its melody. It might not have been that virtue alone that caused everybody to whistle it, but that is what happened. The chorus is as follows:

"Redhead! Redhead! Gingerbreadhead!
"Carrots! Bricktop! Golden-rusthead!
"Rodekopf! Sorrel-top!"
Gee, I'd like to push them in the pond!
"Redhead! Redhead! Gingerbreadhead!
"Freckle-face! Strawberry-blondehead!
"Here's a white horse; hide your head!"
Why wasn't I born a blonde?

Written in 1895, words by John F. Palmer and music by Charles B. Ward. Okay...I know the word 'redhead' is not in the song Title, but the CHORUS of the song is about a 'strawberry blond' and is as follows: (Thanks to Anne!)
Casey would waltz with a strawberry blond,
And the Band played on,
He'd glide cross the floor with the girl he ador'd,
and the Band played on,
But his brain was so loaded it nearly exploded,
The poor girl would shake with alarm.
He'd ne'er leave the girl with the strawberry curls,
And the Band played on.

‘Jolene’
A song written and performed by country music singer Dolly Parton (1974 album 'Jolene'). The song title "Jolene" came from a cute little redhead girl who asked for her autograph at a concert. The song inspiration came from a tall redhead bank teller who flirted with her husband and his subsequent sudden interest in frequent trips to the bank - Dolly stated she fought this woman 'tooth and nail' for her husband. (Thanks to DianesiteD) (Source: NPR interview)
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can

Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene
