Red Heads More Sensitive to Pain

by Paul
(Blissfield, MI USA)

It has recently been shown that red headed persons need more anesthetic for dental work than other patients. The reason for this seems to be genetic and chemical in nature. The same gene that causes the red hair and freckles also creates a lower pain threshold and resistance to medicines such as Novocaine.

Pain levels...
by: Lee

True! I've known this since I was a kid. Had three dentists not believe until they experienced having to give me two or three times the novacaine. last dentist was dismissive when I warned ahead of time of this...and was frustrated to find out it was true. Since it was MY mouth/teeth, I stood up for what I knew regardless of his ignorance . I laughed when I heard this ' finding' . No news to me!

Agreed

I have naturally red hair and I totally agree with this! I was having a root canal done, and after a minute, I started freaking out because the novocaine wasn't working and the dentist acted like I was crazy. But he eventually did give me more to my insistence.

Sensitive redheads

Reply by Deb at RR: Hi Paul and thanks for writing in about the pain sensitivity. Is pretty interesting! I do have some of that info on this research on my "Genes" page. I know from other redheads who've written in and those in our own family, there does seem to be something to this. Really appreciate your input and hope you visit again.
