Life As a Red Head

by Courtnay
(Canada)

I stumbled across your web page while looking for a new hair style. I'm a natural red head and have had to deal with the teasing and ridicule of others who are mostly jealous. I know how rare I am.

While in University a number of 'funny' things happened. The first was from a guy on my wrestling team. I was sitting beside him after practice one day, having just showered (at the time I used strawberry-smelling shampoo). He turned to me and said, "I always wondered if red heads smelled like strawberries and now I find you do." I don't think I ever laughed so hard. Then I dated a guy who had a history of only dating red heads. It was interesting how many he knew. In my last year I worked as a bartender. The most common pick-up line I received was that redheads were going extinct and that maybe I should work on ensuring we don't.

I always enjoy running into other red heads. Its like we flock to each other when we see another one. There is a special bond we all have that no other hair colour seems to share. We are 'family' in many ways. If you find more than one red head in a room, you are in for a good time. There is something extra special about us that people seem to love.

When my daughter was born she had beautiful dark red hair. Around her first birthday she went blonde with beautiful red highlights. I think I need to try for another red head!!

I love your story! I never knew we smelt like strawberries! As for ridicule, a lot of people make neg comments about my red hair. I try not to let it bother me (as you said, they're jealous) but after a while it gets old and starts to hurt. A few of my "friends" at my school know that the "FC" word offends me alot. They sort of hold it against me and say that if I don't do something they'll shout it out in class. Coming here and viewing stories of people who relate to me helps when I go thru situations like that :)
