Job Applications Tips

Hand Holding Paper

--- FILLING OUT JOB APPLICATIONS ---

-- The application gives the employer information about you they can keep on file in their office.
-- It also tells them how well you follow instructions.
-- Shows your language and spelling skills.
-- They can tell if you're careful or careless filling it, neat or messy.

TIPS:

checkmarkWhen you go into a business to ask for an application, look clean and well dressed. First impressions matter. They may remember you, good or bad

checkmarkIf you’re taking an application home to fill out and return to the business later, get 1 or 2 extras in case you goof up the first one (it happens!)

checkmarkIf you have to fill in the application at the business, have the important info with you like your SSN, names and addresses, education info, work or volunteer info, skills, etc.

checkmarkRead through all of the application carefully first BEFORE you fill it in and think about what you’ll put in each space. Hopefully that will help prevent mistakes when writing in the info.

checkmarkIf you have any questions, ask.

checkmarkAnswer all the questions.

checkmarkDo not leave blanks.

checkmarkBe accurate with all info like phone numbers, names, dates.

checkmarkUse blue or black ink.

checkmarkBe neat and legible so they can actually read it.

checkmarkNo spelling errors.

--- SAMPLE JOB APPLICATION ---

If you’ve never filled out an application before, it helps to practice doing it ahead of time.

The ADVANTAGES?
-- You know what questions they usually ask.
-- You already have the information filled out for the real thing.
-- It's good practice for future jobs.

PrinterYou could even make a copy and take it with you so you can copy names, addresses, when you go to fill out the application. Some places make you fill out the application there or some places let you take it home to return it later.

To download a printable free 3-page SAMPLE JOB APPLICATION (PDF) to practice on, you can click on the PEN:

'Adobe Reader' to open it, you can download it free from their website by CLICKING HERE. Adobe Reader allows you to open and read PDF files.)

EnvelopeNOTE: IF you've NOT heard back from a job application you already sent it in, sometimes it's a good idea to send a follow-up letter. It shows you're interested.

It's a good idea to offer to include a copy of your RESUME with your employment application if is appropriate. It's not needed for fast-food restaurants or similar jobs, but maybe for business offices, etc.
...Have it ready....
