Ginger Irishman

by Robert Malseed
(Ireland)

My mother-in-law said that my 4-year-old son, who was having a tantrum, was "having a Paddy" which according to the English means that the Irish are unpredictable and violent. This notion that Red-Head Irish people are unpredictable and violent developed by the English, and yet Britain/England have been in more military conflicts in the world for the past 200 years than any other country. That Ireland is a neutral country which is established in the Irish Constitution. England is renown for football hooliganism. So in respect we Irish Redheads are pretty much at peace, and probably only get pi**ed off when someone says we are hot-headed because of our hair colour.

Nice to hear from you again Robert... Enjoyed seeing your photo and the race certainly looked grueling! You obviously have a love for the sport so continued success with it...

By the way, wonderful to hear you have a young son...congratulations (assume he may have red hair too???)

I hadn't heard that phrase "having a Paddy" before and appreciated your insight on it. Doesn't seem right or 'human' to label a people group (Irish, red heads, or anyone) like that. Human nature I guess to pick on someone. Personally, my own red head daughters are proud to be gingers and I'm SO proud to be a mom of red heads! We feel very special and blessed. Thanks again for sharing...
