Finally, a redhead!

by Ruth
(South Island, New Zealand)

Archer, our 5th child and only redhead

Archer, our 5th child and only redhead

When I was born, my parents named their red motorboat, 'Rooikoppie' (Afrikaans for Little Redhead) after me. My red, which came from my British dad, did not stay. So, 23 years later, I married a redhead, son and brother to redheads.

We completely expected a redhead with our first child, but she was born with dark hair. We had another child. He was completely blonde! Another daughter followed, dark again. Each time we truly expected to see a redheaded baby. We had another son, another blondie. Finally, our fifth child was born, and he has gorgeous red hair!

This was our 12th year of marriage. Over those years my husband's red darkened to brown, and my hair is dark, so people still ask us where our son got his red hair, not knowing his dad was a redhead at our wedding!

Our sixth child was born a year ago with a dark head of hair, just like his sisters had.

Redhead aunty!
by: Kerry

Great to see your post, Ruth! Yes, your husband (my brother!) was a real redhead as a child and people always said I had strawberry blonde hair. Our mom and dad had similar colour red so we didn't stand a chance to have anything but red! It is now fading but at least it is not going grey!

Amazingly our two precious children were both born with blondie/red hair but both are more blonde now - I say amazingly because they are both adopted!

Wow! - congratulations!

Reply by Deb at RR - Ruth, your submission was such a wonderful surprise -- Plus, that 'mom thing' happened ... I saw your photo of Archer, got teary-eyed, and then found myself smiling broadly as I read your story. I guess parents of redheads must feel the same way -- we have a connection somehow, no matter where we live (even New Zealand or USA!). The photograph is stunning and thanks so much for sharing it with us. Archer's beautiful hair color is similar to my own redheads' color. He's a very handsome young man, definitely a cutey. I loved your family story too. I just have to laugh at how the genetics of red hair works - a big mystery to me!! You just never know what's going to happen. I'm so happy you finally were blessed with a redhead to blend in with the symphony of colors of your other children. Wow. Thanks again for sharing your family's 'redhead story' with us on our web pages. It sure blessed me today. Keep in touch!
