His 1969 film 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' with actor Paul Newman propelled his career. Other hit films included 'Jeremiah Johnson,''The Sting,''Three Days of the Condor,' and the baseball movie 'The Natural.'
In early years he was considered a 'blonde' with his sun-bleached blonde hair, but recent photos show his fair complexion and definite red hair (Strawberry blonde??). So decided to include him. This famous actor has been a heartthrob for years!
Roger Hammond (born 1936). English character actor, appearing in numerous TV series and films. Great as a chubby red-haired pawn shop owner in the Granada Television series ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes, in episode called 'The Redheaded League' in which he consults Holmes regarding a newspaper ad asking that only redheaded men apply. Not a very famous actor I was personally aware of but enjoyable in Sherlock series.
Ronald ‘Ron’ Howard (born 1954). American actor, director, producer. Initially known by role as young red-haired Opie Taylor, the TV son of Andy Griffith in TV series ‘The Andy Griffish Show’ and then later as a teenager on sitcom ‘Happy Days’ as Richie Cunningham. After starting as a young famous actor, he then went on to a brilliant filmmaking career for famous movies such as ‘Apollo 13’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’ among others. His actress daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, is also a redhead.
Rupert Grint (born 1988). Wonderfully red-haired English actor known for playing in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies as Harry Potter’s friend, Ron Weasley. The whole Weasely family has gorgeous red hair! (See fellow redhead 'Weasley' Bonnie Wright.) It's great that Rupert has kept his ginger hair throughout the years of filming the Harry Potter films. (Read his quotes about his red hair on my "Celebrity Quotes" page.)
Scott Grimes (born 1971). US actor, musician. Seen in the popular award-winning TV series ‘ER’ as redhead Dr. Archie Morris. Best known in the miniseries ‘Band of Brothers’ as Tech. Sergeant Donald Malarkey. Turning out to be one of my favorite famous actors.
William H. Macy, Jr. (born 1950) US award-winning actor, director, teacher. Played on TV series ‘ER’ as Dr. David Morgenstern. In multiple films including ‘Mr. Holland’s Opus’ and ‘Jurassic Park III.’ Not brilliantly red hair, but close enough for me to include. Versatile and talented famous actor who's married to actress Felicity Huffman.
Simon Pegg (Simon John Beckingham) (born 1970). British personality who has done a bit of everything -- film director and producer, comedian, writer, and actor. This famous actor recently portrayed engineer Montgomery Scot ('Scotty') in the 2009 movie 'Star Trek', with multiple other film roles. Also played 'Sgt. William Evans' in the World War II HBO series 'Band of Brothers'. Not a natural ginger, he dyed it for the movie Shaun Of The Dead. (Thanks to Bill) Read his quote about his ginger hair.
Ewen Bremner (born 1972). Born in Edinburgh, Scotland. This famous actor has appeared in multiple films, stage roles, and BBC productions. He plays 'Rowley Jefferson' who is the best friend of character 'Greg Heffley' as they attend middle school with its trials and situations growing up. The movie is based on the popular book series of the same name by author Jeff Kinney.
Toby Stephens (born 1969). British actor in numerous film, stage, and TV roles. Parents were also actors - Robert Stephens and Maggie Smith. Notable role was playing the nasty villain 'Gustav Graves' in the 2002 James Bond movie 'Die Another Day'. Also great in the 2006 BBC TV version of 'Jane Eyre' as 'Edward Fairfax Rochester.' Also in BBC series 'Robin Hood' as 'Prince John.' A very talented and diverse famous actor with lovely deep shade of red hair.
Van Johnson (1916-2008) From Swedish and German ancestry, this famous US Hollywood celebrity was a versatile performer, dancer, and actor. He appeared on TV plus multiple US films across 6 decades, acting in serious and comedy roles or musicals. He was quite the heartthrob in the 1940s and 1950s with his redhead, freckle-faced "boy next door" image.
He appeared in the movies 'Two Girls and a Sailor' and 'In the Good Old Summertime'. He played a soldier or pilot in many MGM studios films in the WWII years. This famous actor's notable films also include 'The Caine Mutiny' and '30 Seconds Over Tokyo' ...plus one of MY favorites in the musical 'Brigadoon' with Gene Kelly.
Johnny Whitaker (born 1959). A natural redhead, this American actor is probably most well known for his role on the US TV series that aired from 1966-1971 called 'Family Affair'. He played 6-year-old Jody Davis, who was the young nephew of Brian Keith's character. Appearances in other TV series included 'Green Acres,' 'Bewitched,' 'Gunsmoke,' 'The Virginian,' and 'Marcus Welby,M.D.' He also played the title role as Tom Sawyer in the MGM family musical film 'Tom Sawyer'. The movie cast also includes a young Jodie Foster as Becky Thatcher, plus Celeste Holm and Warren Oates. Regardless of his roles, his wonderful thick, full, curly red hair and adorable face made him a standout!
Spencer Tracy (1900-1967). American actor appearing in films and theater who is considered one of the greatest famous actors. He was nominated multiple times for the Academy Award for Best Actor and then won twice for the movies 'Captains Courageous' and 'Boys Town'. He starred alongside some of the most famous actors and actresses in Hollywood, notably a fellow redhead Katharine Hepburn.
Like me, most people remember his pure white hair or seeing him in black and white films and photos, but Tracy was actually a wonderful redhead. Director Stanley Kramer is quoted saying about Tracy, "And who could have forecast that the red hair would turn pure white?" Plus, color posters from his film 'Pat and Mike' show him with with wonderful red hair (even though in the film it's graying).
’7 Brides For 7 Brothers’ The Title of the 1954 MGM studios musical nominated for best picture. Movie is about 7 lumberjack brothers, ALL with red hair and named alphabetically from the Bible. Matt Mattox as Caleb. Marc Platt as Daniel. Jacques d’Amboise as Ephraim. Tommy Rall as Frank. Russ Tamblyn as Gideon.
