Carrot Top

by Melissa
(Florida)

When I was a child, I was often called carrot top. My mom said that when I was 4 or 5 I started telling people I wasn't a carrot top, because carrot tops are green.

My parents are both brunettes, everyone used to ask them where I got my red hair. My dad just started telling them that I got it from his first wife. My mom was his first wife, but needless to say, no more questions were asked. By the way my maternal grandmother had red hair, so it was the truth. :0)

I hated red hair as a child, not because of being made fun of, but because I was terribly shy and didn't want to be noticed. Red hair doesn't exactly help you fade into the background, so I hated it for making me stick out. Now I really don't think of it until someone mentions it or I happen to see another redhead.

Reply by Deb at RR: Hi Melissa and thanks for writing in. Was fun reading about your experiences. I chuckled when you said your Dad would tell people the red hair came from his 'first wife' -- FUNNY because my husband started saying the same thing to people when they asked where our 2 redhead daughters got the red hair! I admit it works ;) -- people didn't know what to say.

I agree being shy and having red hair is tough...can't just blend in and be unnoticed. You sound lovely and hope you visit again...great hearing from you. :)
