Bullied since I was in 7th grade

by Megan
(St. Louis )

I'd never felt bad or embarrassed about having red hair till I was in 7th grade, when everyone started to make fun of me. At first it was so hard and I would cry and I felt like no one could understand.

I'm almost a junior in high school now and my hardest year for getting made fun of was this year, but I just realized if I didn't have red hair people would find some other way to make fun of me. I've dyed my hair a dark red but never a different color. That's when I realized I really did like having red hair and how pretty it is.

If people make fun of you, just laugh at it and don't take listen to them because they like getting bad reactions out of people. It's not about the color or your hair.

Redheads ARE Special!
by: Pat Welch

Like my mom used to tell me......redheads don't have to TRY to stand out, we already do. All those 'fake' blondes out there are really just 'average,so-so' looking women who have to purchase a bottle of bleach every couple of months so people will look at them. A redhead stands out naturally; we have to do little else (aesthetically) for attention. And the truth is.......men find redheads mysterious and sexy.

Appreciate your honesty and advice!

Thanks Megan for writing in and being so honest about your experiences. I'm so sorry you've had to go through all this. As a mom of redheads, it always hurts my heart to hear stories like yours where people are teasing you. Seems like junior high is often the hardest time for a lot of people, with or without red hair. I believe things will get better, especially as you become confident and comfortable in your own skin, and how pretty you are as a redhead.

I know for me and my own girls it often helped to have a trusted friend, adult, or family member you can share with -- just helps to talk to people sometimes or have a best friend so I hope that will be the case for you too.

You are wise for your young age -- you made a very insightful comment about how bullies just like to get bad reactions out of people...and it's really not about the hair color! You sound like quite a remarkable young lady and I'm so glad you wrote in to share your advice. I know it will help someone! Please visit again...
