I saw this story posted on dailynewstranscript.com (11/10/2009) and I'm quoting from that report...
It's about a redhead teenager (Danielle Ciccotti) who suffers from ataxia (a neurological disorder that affects motor skills, balance, and speech). Her 'redhead' helper is a lovely golden retriever "Rover" who is a specially-trained service dog. He helps her keep her balance plus picks things up, pulls off her socks, turns off lights, opens the fridge, and "braces" to stand strong to help her if she falls down. Her previous service dog (Walker) had died and she was feeling very sad and alone until she got her lovely new dog, Rover.
Her mom, Stephani Ciccotti said, "Danielle is a redhead, and Rover is a redhead. They really look alike."

It might be a bit difficult to understand her at first due to her condition but please listen! Makes us appreciate what we do have, being healthy... and I admire this young lady pushing forward with her education despite the obstacles.
Danielle's recent interviewed appeared on 'theday.com' entitled "A Woman and Her Dog" by Megan Bard, published 02/04/2010. Her grandmother, Darlene, forwarded the article to me...(thank you!)
HERE ARE SOME EXCERPTS FROM HER INTERVIEW:
"God made me walk with a dog and I like walking with a dog. You know what? We don't walk, we strut," she said recently.
A lot has changed since Danielle entered her second-grade classroom with her first aid-dog Walker, an Australian shepherd/bearded collie mix....When Walker died in August at age 12, Danielle was devastated. The family had been searching for a year for another dog so that when the time came they were prepared.
Now 15 years old, Danielle said her peers at school certainly notice Rover, a 2½-year-old golden retriever...While Rover has made life infinitely better for Danielle, the transition between the two dogs was difficult....The 2-week boot camp Danielle went through with disabled war veterans and their service dogs was intense.
...The bond between a service dog and its owner is strong. The dogs are more than crutches, they are pets. They sleep together, eat together, and develop a mutual respect and love for each other.
...With Rover sleeping at her feet, Walker's ashes were kept lovingly in a platinum bone pendent hanging from a silver chain around her neck.
Danielle said there is a spiritual connection between the two dogs. Walker entered her life on April 13, 2001; Rover was born on April 13, 2007.
"It is a sign," she said, smiling as she massaged Rover's soft nose that was resting on her legs.
My Granddaughter by: Darlene
I accidentally stumbled across your site. That little redhead is my amazing granddaughter, Danielle. She has overcome and accomplished more in her short lifetime then many could realize. She continues to write as she bonds greater with Rover. Both are doing great! One has to ONLY BELIEVE IN MIRACLES.
Count my blessings! by: Deb
Reply by Deb at RR: Bravo to this young lady. Reading stories like this always makes me thankful and reminds me to count my blessings. I'm sure this redhead teen has had her share of teasing to endure as well... Love the fact her wonderful service dog is a redhead as well. I've had deaf friends with service dogs and they are amazing. Thanks for sharing the story with us!
