Being a Redhead

by Jess
(New Jersey)

Right now I'm going into 8th grade. Last year was hard because I was different from everyone else. There are very few redheads in my school. I was the only one on my team. This boy in my gym class teased me for about a week. He would say I didn't have a soul and call me a carrot. It bothered me a lot. I would come home and act like everything is fine. YOU HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT. Keeping emotions inside won't help. I would talk about it with my best friends. I stood up to him and he said sorry. He will never cross that road again, but you we are beautiful, unique, and different. My best advice would be to talk about it and stand up for yourself. We are all beautiful and never listen to those rude comments because they are not true.

A wise redhead!

Reply by Deb at RR: Hi Jess -- so glad you wrote in with your story...I think it will help others out there going through the same thing, especially with school starting again in many places.

I get so angry when I hear the same old teasing thing about 'gingers having no soul' -- I feel it just shows how other people don't think for themselves and will follow the crowd and say hurtful things. I'm really proud of you and how you talked about this with friends and confronted the person who teased you... you helped them be more aware of other people's feelings! Yes, redheads ARE beautiful, have beautiful souls (given by God), and you sound awesome! Thanks for sharing!! :)
