Auction Tips

Here are some auction tips for bidding on 'redhead' items listed
on eBay.

UNDERSTAND eBAY and PAYPAL

  • If you are NEW to eBay, they have some excellent tutorial pages you can access for buyers by going to Help>Bidding&Buying>Buying Basics (Click on this link to open new window on eBay site). There’s a lot to learn, but buying items through auctions can be a lot of fun.
  • BEFORE you bid on any auctions, be sure you understand the buying process and how eBay and PayPal work and help protect you.
  • Having a PayPal account is a good option for many buyers, so you may want to set up a PayPal account first. (Click on this link to open new window on PayPal site.)

RESEARCH THE SELLER

  • Check the seller’s Feedback rating, number of transactions, and percentage of positive responses.
  • In the feedback, what do buyers say? Is it praise or complaints?
  • Top sellers have a return policies and/or money-back guarantees. Check their conditions for returns.

THE PURCHASE

  • Read all details about the item you are purchasing and confirm it’s exactly what you want. Check photos closely too.
  • Check delivery costs, shipping and handling costs, any insurance for expensive items (especially if to a different country).
  • To get more information from the seller, you can click on the
"Ask seller a question" under the Seller Profile. You can ask for more photos and details about the item.
  • It’s best to complete your transaction ON eBay and not elsewhere, as eBay protection programs won’t cover transactions outside of eBay.
  • PayPal is a safe way to pay for auction purchases. The seller never sees your bank account or credit card numbers and has Buyer Protection. Do not pay using instant cash wire transfer or checks, as you aren’t protected.
  • eBay also has a Security & Resolution Center you can visit for any disputed transactions.
